年级 (nián jí) literally combines 年 (nián), meaning 'year', and 级 (jí), meaning 'level' or 'grade'. Together, it refers to a student's academic year or grade level in the Chinese school system — for example, first grade (一年级), ninth grade (九年级), or first year of university (大一年级). It is used exclusively in educational contexts to denote progression through formal schooling.

The term is neutral and standard across mainland China, Taiwan, and other Mandarin-speaking regions. Unlike English 'grade', which can also mean a score or mark, 年级 never means a letter or numerical evaluation; that sense is covered by 成绩 (chéngjì) or 分数 (fēnshù). 年级 is always followed by a number (e.g., 三年级) or a modifier like 高中 (gāozhōng, 'senior high') to specify the stage: 高中一年级 (gāozhōng yī nián jí, 'first year of senior high school').
