Yuèjù (Shaoxing opera) is one of China’s most influential regional operas, originating in the Shaoxing area of Zhejiang Province. The character 越 (yuè) refers historically to the ancient Yue state and region—now roughly modern Zhejiang—while 剧 (jù) means 'drama' or 'opera'. Together, 越剧 literally means 'Yue-region opera'. It is renowned for its lyrical melodies, soft singing style, and emphasis on female performers—especially in lead roles—and often features romantic or historical stories drawn from classical literature.

Unlike Beijing opera, which uses elaborate costumes and martial arts elements, yuèjù emphasizes vocal expression, delicate gestures, and poetic dialogue.
