‘后弄’ (hòu lòng) literally means ‘back lane’ — a narrow alleyway located behind buildings, especially in traditional residential neighborhoods of eastern China, such as Shanghai or Ningbo. The character 后 (hòu) means ‘behind’ or ‘rear’, and 弄 (lòng) refers to a small lane or alley, often enclosed by walls or rows of shikumen or courtyard houses. Unlike the more formal term 巷 (xiàng), 弄 carries strong regional connotations and is commonly used in Wu-speaking areas.

This term evokes a sense of local community life: children playing, neighbors chatting, laundry strung between windows, and street vendors passing through. While ‘弄’ alone can mean ‘lane’ (pronounced lòng), it’s homophonous with the verb 弄 (nòng, ‘to do/mess with’), so context and tone are essential. ‘后弄’ specifically distinguishes the rear alley from the main front lane (前弄, qián lòng) and is rarely used in modern high-rise urban planning.
