The earliest form of 厕 appears in seal script (c. 3rd century BCE), where it clearly combines 厂 (a sloping roof or cliff-shelter) with 侧 — itself built from 人 (person) + 则 (rule/standard). But look closer: in bronze inscriptions, the right side wasn’t yet 侧—it was a simplified pictograph of a *person squatting beside a pit*, with lines suggesting containment and separation. Over centuries, that squatting figure got abstracted into the phonetic component 侧 (cè), which also contributed the pronunciation. The eight strokes today—starting with the sweeping horizontal stroke of 厂, then the descending left-falling stroke, followed by the four precise strokes of 侧—encode both shelter and designated function.
This character appears in the Book of Rites (Lǐjì), describing how ‘the toilet must be placed east of the kitchen, away from dwellings but accessible.’ Its visual structure mirrors that principle: 厂 = sheltered enclosure, 侧 = positioned aside. By the Tang dynasty, 厕 was already used in compound form 厕所 (cèsuǒ)—literally ‘toilet place’—a construction so logical and durable it remains standard today.
