Together, they refer specifically to a type of drawing done quickly and simply—often with pencil, charcoal, or ink—using lines and light shading to capture the essential form, proportion, and structure of a subject without color or heavy detail. It is a foundational art technique taught in studios and schools.

In Chinese art contexts, 素描 emphasizes observation, hand-eye coordination, and compositional clarity. While it can depict any subject—people, landscapes, still lifes—it’s especially common when studying anatomy or animal forms, where accurate line work reveals movement and posture.
