‘脉络’ literally combines ‘脉’ (mài), meaning ‘vein’ or ‘artery’, and ‘络’ (luò), meaning ‘network’ or ‘connecting channels’. Together, they refer to the body’s circulatory system—especially the visible veins under the skin—or, by extension, any interconnected system of pathways. In traditional Chinese medicine, ‘脉络’ also denotes the meridian network through which qi flows.

In modern usage, ‘脉络’ is frequently used metaphorically to describe the logical structure or underlying connections in abstract systems: for example, the chronological flow of a story, the causal relationships in an argument, or the developmental thread in a historical process. It emphasizes clarity, continuity, and interdependence—not just isolated parts, but how they form a coherent whole.
