Carved on oracle bones over 3,000 years ago, 宜 began as a vivid scene: a roof (宀) sheltering a sacrificial vessel (probably 且, an ancestral tablet or altar stand) — suggesting a ritual performed *in the proper place and manner*. Over centuries, the vessel simplified: the top became the two horizontal strokes, the middle vertical stroke emerged, and the bottom evolved from a stylized altar base into the distinctive ‘⺅’-like shape (a variant of 爪 or 豕 in early forms, later standardized). By the seal script era, 宀 crowned a compact, balanced core — eight strokes total — visually embodying ‘order under shelter’.
This origin directly seeded its meaning: what is ritually *fitting* becomes what is generally *appropriate*.
