'Táng zhuāng' literally means 'Tang-style clothing,' but it is not authentic Tang dynasty attire. Instead, it refers to a modern, stylized form of traditional Chinese clothing that emerged in the late 20th century—characterized by mandarin collars, frog buttons (pankou), symmetrical front closures, and often silk or brocade fabrics. Though named after the cosmopolitan Tang dynasty (618–907 CE), the design draws more from Qing dynasty elements and 20th-century tailoring innovations.

This garment is commonly worn during festive occasions like Spring Festival or weddings, and sometimes as formal or cultural performance wear. It is especially popular among older generations and at national celebrations, symbolizing Chinese cultural pride without requiring full historical accuracy. Unlike Hanfu—which seeks historical fidelity—Táng zhuāng prioritizes accessibility, comfort, and visual elegance for contemporary wearers.
