Zhuang brocade (zhuàng jǐn) is a traditional handwoven textile originating from the Zhuang ethnic minority in Guangxi, China. The character 壮 (zhuàng) refers specifically to the Zhuang people—the largest ethnic minority in China—while 锦 (jǐn) means 'brocade' or 'richly decorated silk fabric', historically associated with fine craftsmanship, auspicious patterns, and symbolic motifs. Together, 壮锦 denotes this culturally distinctive textile art form, renowned for its bold geometric designs, vibrant colors (especially red, blue, green, and yellow), and use of cotton, silk, or nylon threads.

Zhuang brocade is traditionally used for clothing (e.g., women’s jackets and baby carriers), bed covers, and ritual items. It often features motifs inspired by nature—such as birds, butterflies, flowers, and mountains—as well as abstract symbols representing fertility, protection, and harmony. Recognized as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage, zhuàng jǐn embodies both artistic expression and ethnic identity, commonly taught in community workshops and showcased in museums and cultural festivals.
