作文 (zuò wén) literally means 'to make/write' (作) + 'text/writing' (文), and refers specifically to a structured, school-assigned piece of writing—such as a short essay, narrative, or descriptive paragraph. It is most commonly used in educational settings, especially in Chinese language classes from elementary through middle school. Students regularly receive 作文 assignments to practice grammar, vocabulary, organization, and expression on topics like family, seasons, holidays, or personal experiences.

Unlike informal writing (e.g., text messages or journal entries), 作文 implies a formal, graded task with clear expectations: proper structure (introduction–body–conclusion), correct grammar and punctuation, appropriate vocabulary, and coherent logic.
