‘钟楼’ (zhōng lóu) literally means ‘bell tower’, but in modern usage it almost always refers to a ‘clock tower’—a tall, freestanding or attached structure housing a large, visible clock, often with decorative architectural features. The character 钟 (zhōng) originally meant ‘bell’ but now commonly means ‘clock’ or ‘timepiece’, while 楼 (lóu) means ‘tower’, ‘multi-story building’, or ‘upper floor’. Together, they denote a prominent civic or historical structure used for public timekeeping and sometimes ceremonial purposes.
