Together, the term refers specifically to the traditional act of pouring wine as a ceremonial offering, typically during funerals, ancestral worship, or memorial rites. It is not casual drinking but a respectful, symbolic gesture acknowledging the deceased or honoring ancestors.

This ritual is deeply rooted in Chinese cultural and Confucian traditions, where physical offerings express filial piety and reverence. The wine is usually poured onto the ground, into a small cup before a portrait or tablet, or onto an altar. While historically tied to mourning, 奠酒 may also occur at historic site commemorations or tomb-sweeping (Qingming Festival).
